After graduating from Lebanon Valley College in 1974 with a B.S. in Mathematics, Deborah Buckfelder relocated to Palmyra. She began her career as a math teacher at Palmyra Area Middle School. While obtaining her master’s degree at Penn State University, she concentrated on teaching methods that facilitated the students’ understanding of algebra through the transition from concrete to abstract concepts. Deborah instilled a love of math and STEM in her students. She was pivotal in encouraging and mentoring girls to pursue further mathematics and STEM education and careers.
In addition to her academic role, she coached cross country and track, focusing on leadership and teamwork. Deborah empowered her female students, showing them how to be strong women.
Deborah is an elected leader of the Capital Area Beekeepers Association. She has aided the local environment with her bee hives. Deborah has used her knowledge of beekeeping and the process of pollination to educate students and community members.
In her retirement, she volunteers as a Board Member on the Palmyra Public Library Board of Directors. Deborah provides leadership by advancing STEM Education for members of all ages through programs and resources. Her mathematical expertise was instrumental in the success of the Library’s Capital Campaign to retire its mortgage debt.
Deborah is a member of the Palmyra Garden Club. She helps maintain the flower garden at the Palmyra Public Library and assists with organizing and planning the Annual Flower Show. She also participates in the Garden Club’s monthly instructional programs.
